After the Wedding Review: Mystery, Melodrama and Michelle Williams

Films Online to Watch for free

Michelle Williams gives great righteous anger. Like any talented actor, she has an incredible range from mousy girl Friday to a giggly Marliyn Monroe to Manchester by the Seas grieving matriarch and an ability to add beautiful little nuances to the biggest of scenes. But give Williams the chance to express a wounded sense of self, and the space to let that pain transform into a sort of slowburn fury, and the woman is unstoppable. No one does quiet storms and emotional boiling-point build-ups like her. Shes a first-rate onscreen raw nerve.

Consider After the Wedding an Exhibit A to her extraordinary abilities its the best, and maybe the only way to think of director Bart Freundlichs Americanized remake of the 2006 Danish tearjerker. Were introduced to her sitting in a Lotus position and lording over a group of young Indian children. Her character, Isabel, oversees an orphanage in Calcutta; an impatient frustration over the lack of funds for food, bedding, etc. is a hint of the rage looming on the horizon. Luckily, theres a possible donor who may have the answer to their financial prayers. The catch is that she wants to meet Isabel in person before officially signing the check.

The World and 'Hollywood' According to Quentin TarantinoVanessa Kirby, Your New Summer-Movie Action Hero

Enter Theresa (Julianne Moore), her benefactor and bougie counterpart. You could say she has it all: the billion-dollar media placement company she built from scratch, the gorgeous mansion, the handsome metal-sculptor husband (Billy Crudup, handsome and occasionally sculpting metal). Theresa is wheeling and dealing and barking orders into her phone, as well as micromanaging wedding details for her bride-to-be daughter Grace (Abby Quinn). Shes put Isabel up in a swank hotel and given her a driver, which leads to the first of three amazing looks that Williams unleashes. The existential befuddlement at the opulence around her such luxury, flying in the face of the poverty shes seen is all there in this visitors face. There is more character development in that confusion then there is most full performances.

The second look comes when the two meet, and Isabel lays out the reasons why her charity is worth Theresas time. Then the CEO interrupts a litany of disease stats to discuss a lobster shortage for her childs reception with her assistant, andwell, remember that part about righteous anger? The disbelief is palpable. The urge to scream choice obscenities about entitlement are burbling to the surface. Then, knowing she has to bear this to get her wards the help they need, she buries it all. (All of this happens before our eyes, and without a word.) Still, Theresa wants to revisit the numbers. Why doesnt Isabel postpone her trip back home for a few days? Better yet, why not come to the wedding over the weekend?

And this brings us to Look No. 3, which occurs shortly after Isabel arrives late for the ceremony. Sitting in the back, she notices that the brides dad seems familiar. A little too familiar. He recognizes her, and is immediately shook. They try to surreptitiously talk to each other, but keep getting interrupted. Isabel attempts to keep her cool, which seems increasingly harder to do. Then the bride gives a speech, and suddenly, an even deeper expression of recognition crosses the guests face.

Those whove seen Susanne Biers Oscar-nominated original know what happens next, though they might note how swapping the genders this time around the 2006 version cast Mads Mikkelsen and Rolf Lassgrd in the lead roles gives the storys familial elements a much different resonance. For those who havent, its still pretty clear where this blend of Sirkian melodrama and actors showcase is going, and that from here on in, audiences are in for another round of When Great Actors Give Very Good Performances in OK Films. Its all over but the shouting, as well as a swerve into TV-movie territory, some unavoidable maudlin interludes and a crying jag scene that kicks the histrionics meter into the red.

A lot of potentially interesting material is left on the table (we find out why Isabel ended up saving kids in India, but very little about what cultural landmines a Westerner with a bindi and a Messiah complex might trod upon) and precious little is added to the the source materials narrative. After the Wedding knows that it has to leave the heavy lifting to the actors, which is why we get Julianne Moore giving a masterclass on the art of the Vodka tantrum and Billy Crudup investing a sense of melancholia in his boho golden boy. As for Abby Quinn, everything she does here is proof that her whos-that? turn in Landline (2017) wasnt a one-off, and that shell find lovely little bits of business even in regrettably unformed roles.

But this is Williams spotlight, and its worth slogging through some of the soapier-to-sludgier aspects to watch her ply her craft. The way she can simultaneously seem transparent and withholding, steel-backed and seconds away from breaking down, enraged and empathetic is indeed awe-inspiring, despite the rickety vehicle in which shes demonstrating these balancing acts. Pedigree or no, After the Wedding is eventually revealed to be just another glossy mediocrity suffused with upper-crust guilt. After the movies over, however, you cant quite shake how Williams has made you think its a better work than it is.

David Crosby: Remember My Name Review: Laurel Canyons Lion in Winter

Films Online to Watch for free

At 77, the white-haired troubadour David Crosby can boast an enviable career as a founding member of both the Byrds and Crosby, Stills and Nash, as well as a prolific solo artist. Just dont expect pretty pictures. Directed by A.J. Eaton and produced by Cameron Crowe, the doc doesnt skip over Crosbys years as a heroin and cocaine junkie who did five months of Texas prison time on drugs and weapons charges. And it definitely doesnt soft-peddle his reputation as an SOB who pissed off damn near everyone hes ever worked with. I alienated all of them, says Crosby, and the film is loaded with examples. Roger McGuinn of the Byrds calls him insufferable. Graham Nash and Neil Young both let him have it. Joni Mitchell broke up with him with a song.

Sundance 2019: Crosby, Miles and Leonard Cohen's MuseExclusive: David Crosby Looks Back on Drugs, Bandmate Conflicts in Documentary Trailer

David Crosby on Looking Back Without Anger in Candid New Doc

Crosby doesnt defend himself he knows hes not easy. The rock star insists that he never wrote or sounded better because of the drugs he took. He also knows the fact that hes still alive is some kind of miracle. A diabetic with eight stents in his heart, Crosby has had a liver transplant and remains convinced that his heart will kill him in just a few years. These sound like the words of an old man, but nothing about the man on view here suggests infirmity or self pity. He can lunge right at you. Listen to the anecdote he tells about encountering John Coltrane mid-performance one genius in thrall to another. Its electrifying.

What makes David Crosby: Remember My Name one of the best rock docs of all time is the no-bull immediacy of the filmmaking. The past comes up via visits to the Laurel Canyon Country Store where Crosby and his colleagues made their earliest music. Though the impact those songs had in the 1960s and 1970s still resonates, Crosby himself resists sentimental nostalgia. Hes tough on his foes, especially Jim Morrison, but toughest on himself and the times he wasted indulging his baser instincts. Crosby acknowledges the ghosts that haunt him, but refuses to get tangled up in the cobwebs. Though we see archival clips and photos of the musician through the years, with the timeless sounds of Helplessly Hoping, Suite: Judy Blue Eyes, Carry On and Dj Vu alive on the soundtrack, its the way the film and its scrappy subject live so potently and provocatively in the present that make it indispensable.

Crosby continues to record solo albums that thunder with immediacy and purpose. And his voice resonates with a honeyed clarity that seems untouched by time. The film benefits from the savvy presence of Jan Dance, Crosbys wife of 32 years, and the music that helped define those years. Otherwise, Remember My Name avoids the use of talking heads to remind us of Crosbys lasting greatnesss. The film believes in the efficacy of show over tell. Expect no apologies from this lion in winter. Hear him roar.

Hobbs & Shaw: Fast & Furious Spinoff Brings Surreal Silliness

Stream Movies Online free

Whatever this is, its not a movie its a product more deserving of a road test than a review. Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw is the ninth chapter in the Fast & Furious series (the gross is over $5 billion across the previous eight films) and its first spinoff. Meaning if youve never seen a F&F movie, the street-racing franchise with Vin Diesel that dates back to 2001, you wont be confused it wont matter a damn. Meaning Hobbs & Shaw is a well-oiled machine that puts two supporting charmers from the series Dwayne Johnsons Luke Hobbs, a DSS agent and single father, and Jason Stathams Deckard Shaw, a rogue military operative in the center ring and lets those fan-favorites rip. Meaning, how can you resist?

Vanessa Kirby, Your New Summer-Movie Action Hero'Hobbs & Shaw': 'Fast & Furious' Spinoff Brings Surreal Silliness

You wont. Never mind that Hobbs & Shaw drags on for 134 minutes and has more family subplots than Downton Abbey. Director David Leitch (John Wick, Atomic Blonde, Deadpool 2) keeps the action and the comedy at full velocity. Hobbs and Shaw insult each other like high-school mean girls, mostly about Shaws short Hobbit legs and Hobbs resemblance to a giant tattooed baby. Throw in Idris Elba, having a blast as Brixton, the black Superman, a former Brit agent whos been carved up into a cyber-villain and ordered to capture a virus that can terminate half the globe. Then theres the dazzling Vanessa Kirby (so fine and feisty as Princess Margaret on The Crown) as Shaws Mi6 agent sister Hattie Helen Mirren plays their criminal mastermind mom who has just stolen said virus by injecting it into her body.

Getting the virus out without killing Hattie or all extant life on earth thats the plot cooked up by screenwriters Chris Morgan and Drew Pearce. We all know where this is going like you didnt think Hobbs would get flirty with Shaws sister? and cheers to the movie for not even pretending anything in it is remotely new. This is my fourth time saving the world, says Hobbs with a sigh we can all share. Oh, there is a climactic visit to Hobbs (and Johnsons) native Samoa, but there will be no more spoilers except to say that The Rock does a killer Samoan war dance.

Johnson and Statham invest Hobbs & Shaw with a surreal silliness thats infectious. Catch Hobbs lasso a chopper and drag it down from the sky with one bulging arm or Shaws fight choreography in the sensational corridor scene. This movie definitely has its moments. The problem is it keeps repeating them stunt, banter, stunt until they wear out their welcome. Furious 7 managed to mix hot action with genuine heart. It can be done if theres something more than the box office calling the shots. Hobbs & Shaw thinks it can get by just pretending. It probably can. Mindless fun is good enough in a pinch. But what happens when movies follow Brixtons example and slowly, inexorably turn into cyborgs? Road-test ready, for sure, but untouched by human hands.
