The Cats Trailer Is Even More Terrifying Than Anticipated

We shouldve seen it coming. When we first learned that a film adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webbers long-running Broadway musical Cats, would be a mix of live-action and CGI, there was a collective dread over how the computer-generated human-cat hybrids would look on-screen. Earlier this week, the stars of the film notably Taylor Swift shared a behind-the-scenes teaser of the movie, fawning over the musicals history and showing off their choreography without a whiff of the actual felines. Now we know why.

The first official Cats trailer is arguably creepier than the It Chapter 2 trailer also released on Thursday. The faces of James Corden, Jennifer Hudson, Rebel Wilson, Jason Derulo, and Dame Judi Dench are grafted onto CGI heads with stiff cat ears and tufts of fur that move and sway with all the liveliness of a Shrektechnical goof. Thats nothing to speak of the Barbie-doll bodies to which those fake heads are affixed. The fur looks like it was rendered in 1995.

Listen, is CGI animation okay? I know there are more pressing technological issues, what with surveillance and climate change and apps that age your face in seconds while stealing your privacy, but in the realm of animated entertainment, have we flown too close to the sun? What was that Miyazaki quote Im thinking of?

On Tuesday, shortly after being announced as an official selection for the 2019 Toronto International Film Festival, the first trailer for Taika Waititis new film JoJo Rabbit was released. The movie hits theaters October 18th.

Described as a World War II satire, the film follows JoJo (Roman Griffin Davis, in his first major film role), a lonely and bullied German boy who joins the Hitler Youth as its fascist leader rises to power. When JoJo learns that his mother (Scarlett Johansson) is hiding a young Jewish girl (Thomasin McKenzie) in their attic, he must confront his prejudiced and nationalistic beliefs and decide which side of history hell be on.

Along with directing and writing the film, Waititi also stars in it as a bumbling imaginary friend version of Adolf Hitler, who appears in JoJos daydreams. In the trailer, as JoJo broods over his low social standing, Hitler quips with a shrug, Let them say whatever they want! People used to say a lot of nasty things about me, Oh this guys a lunatic, look at that psycho, hes going to get us all killed!'

JoJoRabbitis based on the Christine Leunens book Caging Skies. The cast also includes Rebel Wilson, Stephen Merchant, Alfie Allen and Sam Rockwell. This past weekend at San Diego ComicCon, Waititi announced that he was also slated to direct Disney/Marvels 2021 superhero film Thor: Love and Thunder, a follow-up to his 2017 effort Thor: Ragnarok. Tessa Thompson will reprise her role as Valkyrie, who is named king of Asgard and goes looking in search of a new queen, becoming the Marvel Cinematic Universes first openly LGBT character.

Something happens to you when you leave this town, Mike Hanlon says in the beginning of the final trailer for It Chapter Two. The farther away, the hazier it all gets.

As the Losers Club reunite in Derry, Maine clinking beers in a Chinese restaurant while determining how to take down Pennywise the Dancing Clown once and for all flashbacks to their younger selves are revealed, to the summer of 1988 when they were last together. For 27 years, I dreamt of you, Pennywise (Bill Skarsgrd) seethes through his razor-sharp teeth.

Heroic heartthrob Bill Denbrough (James McAvoy) gets trapped in a terrifying house of mirrors trying to save a child from Pennywise. He slams himself into mirror after mirror, searching for an exit thats ultimately just his reflection. Pennywise lowers his excruciatingly long tongue out, giggling Hello, as Bill begs him not to harm the child through the glass.

Elsewhere in the trailer, Jessica Chastains Beverly Marsh is covered in blood. At the annual Scarediego Comic-Con yesteday, Chastain jokingly called the scene Carrie on steroids. She told host Conan OBrien it required 4,500 gallons of fake blood on set; she suspects it will win the record for most fake blood used in a horror film.

It Chapter Two will float to theaters on September 6th.

Months after her breakout horror role in Jordan Peeles Us, Lupita Nyongo builds on that momentum with the new trailer for Little Monsters. In the grisly horror-comedy, the actress stars as Miss Caroline, a brave schoolteacher who shields her students from a zombie breakout during a field trip gone awry.

The clip opens with military personnel strategizing how to defeat the undead. Its zombies again, one character intones. Fast ones or slow ones, sir? another responds. Luckily for all involved, its the slow variety, as the outbreak unfolds in the sleepy town of Pleasant Valley.

The trailer shows Miss Caroline working with Dave (Alexander England), a washed-up musician on-hand as a chaperone, and kids show personality Teddy McGiggle (Josh Gad) to defeat the zombies. Adding a comedic spin, Caroline attempts to keep her students blissfully unaware of the apocalyptic scene distracting them with ukulele songs and telling them the bloodthirsty beings are part of a game. Gads character, meanwhile, is more defeatist about their potential doom, telling the kids, Were all gonna die.

Abe Forsythe (2016s Down Under) wrote and directed Little Monsters, which premiered in January at the Sundance Film Festival. The film hits theaters in the U.K. and Ireland on November 15th; a U.S. release date has not been announced.

Robert De Niro, Al Pacino and Joe Pesci recreate the story of long-lost union boss Jimmy Hoffa in the gripping new trailer for Martin Scorseses long-awaited crime drama The Irishman. The film will premiere at the New York Film Festival, September 27th, before it is released on Netflix and in select theaters this fall.

De Niro anchors the film as the Frank The Irishman Sheeran, a World War II vet and hitman. In the opening scenes of the trailer Pescis Russell Bufalino boss of the Bufalino crime family puts the staid Sheeran on the phone with Hoffa (Pacino), who says, Our friend speaks very highly of you. I heard you paint houses prompting a quick cut to Sheeran throwing a mark through a glass door and putting a bullet in his head.

The rest of the trailer teases the broad scope of the historical drama, which spans several decades and delves into Hoffas story and, per a statement, the hidden corridors of organized crime: Its inner workings, rivalries and connections to mainstream politics.

The Irishman boasts an all-star supporting cast that includes Harvey Keitel, Ray Romano, Bobby Cannavale, Anna Paquin, Jesse Plemons, Jack Huston, Stephanie Kurtzuba, Kathrine Narducci and more. The film is based on the book, Heard You Paint Houses by Charles Brandt, with an adapted screenplay by Steven Zaillian. The film notably used new anti-aging digital effects to depict De Niro, Pacino and Pescis characters as up to 30 years younger.

Two British soldiers are tasked with carrying a fateful message across enemy lines to an imperiled battalion in the chilling new trailer for Sam Mendes World War I film, 1917.

1917 stars George MacKay and Dean-Charles Chapman as Schofield and Blake, the two soldiers handed the harrowing mission by a commanding officer played by Colin Firth. In the trailer, Firths character warns the pair that a battalion is in danger of being massacred if they go ahead with a planned attack, and the only way to save them is if Blake and Schofield are able to deliver the warning message in time. Complicating matters, Blakes own brother is one of the soldiers at risk of being slaughtered.

The clip goes on to capture Schofield and Blakes frantic race against time as they tear through trenches and swamps filled with dead bodies, and streak across battlefields while bombs explode just behind them. As Benedict Cumberbatchs character gravely warns, There is only way this war ends last man standing.

1917 will also star Mark Strong, Andrew Scott, Richard Madden and Claire Duburcq. Mendes wrote the script with Krysty Wilson-Cairns.

After making a big splash at the Cannes Film Festival back in May, Robert Eggers new film The Lighthouse finally has its first official trailer. The nautical psychodrama arrives in theaters October 18th.

The film, shot on 35mm black-and-white film and presented in Academy (square) ratio, stars Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson as a lighthouse keeper and his apprentice, who are stationed on a remote and mysterious New England island in the 1890s. Naturally, the two men start to experience hallucinations, lunacy and psychological turmoil during their prolonged isolation. And yes, there are plenty of sea shanties, dancing jigs and pirate accents from both Dafoe and Pattinson, if thats what floats your boat.

The Lighthouse is the second feature to be written and directed byEggers, who previously made the 2015 period horror film The Witch (set in 1630s New England). Eggers co-wrote the script forThe Lighthouse with his brother, Max Eggers.

At Cannes, the film was met with wide acclaim and was named the best movie at the festivals Critics Week and Directors Fortnight by the International Federation of Film Critics.
